Daniel Livingstone's Blog

What wrong with parochial interests?

Over on ScottishGames.net, David Thomson has pointed out the scale of the problem now facing the Scottish games industry, and I think he's pretty much spot on that we need companies that make games that inspire people, and companies that have the sticking power to last 20+ years in the industry.

I think we have some companies that might yet do this, so fingers crossed.

But David… Continue

Greater Glasgow Games group has a new home

Announced by my colleague John Sutherland
a little while ago, the Greater Glasgow Games group (GGGg or g4 - take your pick!) has had a couple of meetings now, and I'll be trying to keep things moving for the next little while...

Our current focus is on mapping the games industry in the Glasgow area - every so often we learn about another… Continue

I'm forwarding this on behalf of one of my research students, Hanno. He's looking for folk to take a survey he's posted online as part of his research, see message below:

Dear all

(apologies for crossposting)

It would be a great help if you could fill in this survey and pass it on to your students / colleagues: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LDTW2X7

Teen social networking & the guardian

Last year for the first time I found some of my students reporting that they had stopped using Facebook/Bebo/similar and even deleted their accounts - and over the past few years have consistently found that many students do not use the sites.

The Guardian reports on findings from Ofcom that teens are now spending less time on social networking sites… Continue

When blogging I mainly write about game based learning and related topics... http://learninggames.wordpress.com

As the University of Paisley is now University of the West of Scotland, my homepage needs a major update - so I'll not bother posting the link to that just now.

Hi Daniel,

Many apologies; have just realised I've double-booked! I won't be able to make it to the Doocot today (12 May); attending a Business Gateway workshop that's not scheduled to finish until 12.30. Maybe next week?

Hi Daniel,

It's only taken me 9 months since your invite! I'm not sure if I let you know, but we took Blair on and he's been working with us since and doing really well.

I'd actually like to pick your brains on another position within Chunk if you have time - more of a games producer role.

Hi Daniel,

Good to hear from you again. I was just wondering if you guys were looking for project briefs to give to your students this year?

Oooh... Would be quite interested if it meant that we could grow their expectations of staying in Scotland to undertake work in the creative digital media sector. Let's talk dates and places. emcintosh@channel4.co.uk

Hi Ewan,

here at UWS we're just getting used to being a four campus university - plus a growing distance learning community. So if we can steal any of your ideas to ebable us to "deliver ... valuable content and services on digital media platforms with significant impact and in sustainable ways" that would be nice ;-)

At the same time we have a lot of undergrads in comp science, animation/modelling, game technology, etc... some of whom (I hope) might have their own ideas for projects which would fit in with the 4iP goals.

Fancy seeing you here :-) The word of mouth approach must work. Hope you can help us see where some of the gaming influences could go in 4iP projects, or indeed come up with some yourself.
