A New Year and a New Challenge

Happy New Year to all at 38minutes.

I am just back from a welcome break in Sri Lanka and I have had time to reflect on 2010 and confront the year ahead.

A major priority for me is managing the house in a new way.

Towards the end of last year I was given a…

The Digital Future is West Lothian

ITV put its 6% year-on-year fall in ITV.com video views down to the “Susan Boyle effect”. In 2009 the Britain's Got Talent contestant became a global phenomenon, with massive online interest.

The broadcaster said for the first nine months of this year average monthly video views fell by about 1m to 15.6m. However, during the same period monthly unique users grew 13% to 9m. The Guardian quoted Dan Cryan, head of broadband at… Continue

Are you socially inadequate, pimpled, single and slightly seedy?

BBC presenter Andrew Marr has insisted citizen journalism would not replace professional newsgathering, telling the Cheltenham Literary Festival:

"A lot of bloggers seem to be socially inadequate, pimpled, single, slightly seedy, bald cauliflower-nosed, young men sitting in their mother's basements and ranting. They are very angry people." He went on: "OK - the country is full of very angry people. Many of us are angry people… Continue

"The character art for APB was praised by the industry, thanks to a strong team effort over many years," O'Ready told GamesIndustry.biz. "For my part, I'm interested in basing this company in Dundee, which is a great city full of talent, and… Continue

Hi Stuart, great to see you last week at the 38 minutes, I am truly not worthy in your presence. Never having been to a pitching session previously, I wasn't sure what to expect and hope that I didn't make an idiot of myself and have managed to get a finger in the door to getting my ideas considered if not a foot.

Penny Miles a former PHD graduate at Cardiff UNI specialises in International Politics and Criminology and lectures at both Glamorgan Uni and Cardiff Uni has just returned from Chille. She has been helping Amnesty International by advising on cases of lesbian, gay and transgenda issues there. There is a Chillean judge, who left her husband for another woman. The court took her children away from her as it is against the law to be gay and gave her husband sole custody. Two more appeals, one in the supreme court have ruled in his favour. The next step is taking it to the American equivalent of the court of human rights in August. Penny has been helping and being paid expenses only. She cannot afford to go over for the August hearing, she is a single mum and struggling to juggle time committments. There are more extreme transgenda, gay and lesbian issues going on in other parts of the world i.e. Africa and the Middle East. But this is more accessible and Penny has all the contacts and background? Are you interested?

I was not on my best form last thursday to say the least, as I had been terrified and grief stricken all week that a dear friend and extremely creative young man, that I once worked with was being sent to prison because of a huge failing in the Mental health services in Haringay. (Now there's a surprise) I only heard from him on Friday and he is being re-assessed, but that's another story.

Regards Lisa Callaway

Hi Stuart,

I run a smaller Ning network aimed at young people living in Scotland who aspire to work in film, television and video production. I was wondering about the possibility of publishing my newsletters on 38minutes in some form or another. You can check out the most recent newsletter: http://mim.io/3f6c4.

I've been running Media Muppet for two years now and it's very rewarding. I would like to contribute some of the content towards 38minutes (possibly in an e-zine style) if that's okay. All the best!

Thanks for the welcome! I've already made a few mistakes using this site, but hopefully I'll get the hang of it soon. Do let us know if you can think of anyone you'd recommend for the job I just posted.
