Aberdeen's Open Knowledge Network

Last week I spent some time in Aberdeen with Scottish Enterprise's man in the north (or one of them) Steve Harrison, on a 4iP equivalent of speed-dating. I met a plethora of design, technology, learning and innovation companies who will hopefully become the focus of some commissions in the future. Having had a great, if brief time, with some of the folk at Gray's Art School, I picked up on an irregular meetup that seems to offer a first class mix of music, innovation and… Continue

Contracts, contracts, contracts... normal service resumed shortly

If you follow the main 4iP blog you'll have seen that the team is entering a few weeks of contracting: just getting a bunch of approved ideas through the final hurdle as quickly as we can.

For the past two months I've been in the frustrating position of meeting literally hundreds of companies and individuals from Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Belfast, Newcastle and… Continue

Creativity, Media and Journalism

I attended the Awakening Creative Entrepreneurship workshop on Creativity, Media and Journalism in Derry, Northern Ireland today. There was an interesting discussion led by Roy Greenslade, David McKittick and Deric Henderson. It was an open-ended discussion, with some people agreeing with Roy on the imminent death of newspapers and everything going onto the internet in about 10 years time . My contribution amounted to two things: how do you ensure the production of news on the net is… Continue

BarCampBelfast - 252 attendees and growing

4iP is always happy to support crowd-sourced, hand-picked, organic and idea-crammed meetings of minds, but BarCampBelfast is already going beyond the call of duty. And it's not even started yet!

BarCamp is now just under a month away, and thanks to the crazy number of people registering and eager to talk, Andy McMillan (Chief Unorganiser of the Unconference) has had… Continue

Social Media Television

A recent article from ReadWriteWeb states that over one-fourth of users ages 18-24 are interested in having more social media features integrated into their TV. Mainly in the form of multi-player gaming and chat. Watching TV is not enough and with programs such as iPlayer and 4OD, the… Continue

Meebo Ads: Innovative or obvious

Some of you might have notices that Meebo has gone from Window's Blue to sleek black in colour (mine hasn't however, so I'm guessing they're rolling it out amongst users like Facebook does when it changes up it's platform).

This step has been taken to allow advertising on the mass of empty space without it being too intrusive on Meebo users. Users who seem to be either fine with it or feel like it was a… Continue

Measuring the contribution of collaboration technologies

'Count what is countable, measure what is measurable. What is not measurable, make measurable' (attributed to Gallileo)

I've recently been struggling with ways to measure the contribution of social media and other collaboration technologies for existing businesses. With the vast variety of initiatives, technologies and tools, what framework can we use to measure the value of these tools?

As a base - I've taken the… Continue

Call to 'shut down' Street View....

A formal complaint about Google's Street View has been sent to the Information Commissioner (ICO).

Drawn up by privacy campaigners, it cites more than 200 reports from members of the public identifiable via the service.

Privacy International wants the ICO to look again at how Street View works.

"The ICO has repeatedly made clear that it believes that in Street View the necessary safeguards are in place to protect people's privacy," said… Continue

Why the need for AmbITion?

European Newspaper lobby: "Google News are thieves". Jings

Streets of San Francisco

And so Cross Creative's adventures in Silicon Valley draw to a close...

What have we learned?

Immeasurable lessons in digital innovation, positive approach, anything is possible, not to be afraid of failure, we've met some incredible people and for a trip that was learning focused I sensed more than a few connections that will I'm sure become working relationships.

On a personal level I learned not to promise to blog about a trip unless you bring a laptop!… Continue

New music for a new era - mashups and Twitter concerts show organisation: without the organisation!

This is the most amazing mash up: a new piece of music called ThruYou created from existing YouTube videos - amateurs and professionals play together! Arts funders, IP gurus and arts organisations take note - this is what can be organised without the organisation!

Last night my favourite classical musician of the year (spotted at EdTwestival) Peter Gregson of Coffeeloop (an Edinburgh music and technology start-up)… Continue
