[ #ghc GameHorizon ]: Nils-Holfer Henning on Innovation in Browser Games

I've been at Game Horizon Conference in Newcastle this week. Here are some the highlights from Nils' talk on Browser-based games.

Browser-based games go for the lowest common entrance point possible: Choose a game; Register; Play. No download, no installation. This low barrier to entry has led to the $12b browser game industry being as…

Content & Consolidation : Bing, Project Canvass, Newspass, and Disney's Facebook App for tix

Microsoft’s Bing has been around for just over a year, trying to cause a revolution in the search and location services market. But it hasn't got the market share that I expected. So it was with great interest that Microsoft this week rolled out Bing Entertainment, a dedicated hub within Bing that hosts film clips and trailers, music videos, TV clips and games Bing Entertainment is only live in the US at the… Continue

Chekhov

Anton Chekhov is reckoned to be the master of the classical short story. In his letters he sets out the basis for good writing: objectivity, honesty, brevity, daring and compassion. Hallelujah. Brief writers please take note.

Where do music legends come from?

On the train to work this morning, I was thinking that I grew up in a house full of music - Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Gil Scott-Heron, Ray Charles, Tracy Chapman, Nina Simone.... and about how much their music and words inspired me.

I was wondering whether I could give my kids such a rich environment to grow up in, and it struck me that, decades later, I'd still turn to those same artists.

Why is that?

These… Continue

Blue

What we mean by a colour depends on who we are – our references, our culture, our past, our life. A single sliver of colour can transform how we view a space: what we think it stands for, and the boundaries we place on its potential.

Sometimes what one person sees as a detail is not a little thing but something which dominates another person’s response to a place. So, for some, colour is a little thing – for others it is an overwhelming… Continue

Bursting my Bubbles

It's summer, time to relax and take a break. Another year over, as John L said. Neighbours off to Arran (again) for their hols. Might tidy up the garage / loft / car boot. Or, then again, mebbes not.

I was looking around for some inspiration. An art exhibition at a local castle: but it was the same ol', same ol'. The BBC Proms: ditto. Could always do some more Munros and bring home yet-more foties of heather-shapes with some sky and a… Continue

Sir Sean saves two wet beavers...

Oh dear, as much as I loved Sylvain Chomet's 'The Illusionist' and Jana Prchalova's 'Mondo's Search for the Sun' and the potentially rosy future of Scottish animation, I can't help but feel Tessa Hartman's 'Sir Billi Sizzle' might scupper some of the fine work and praise...Hey mabe they'll sell it in North… Continue

What are you doing Vs. Who are you being?

I was reading a critique of Andy Murray's public image over time. He's been lying low, a little less controversial than usual, and people are begining to speculate on whether he's intimidated, focused, or relaxed as he attempts to take Wimbledon.

It made me realize that we're all putting out our public face these days. Twitter was founded on the premise of 'what are you doing?' but I read feeds and think "What kind of person are you?'… Continue

BarCamp Glasgow - when the crowd is the star

A HUGE thanks to everyone - 25 presenters and the 200+ attendees - for making Friday's inaugural BarCamp Glasgow such a huge, frenetic success. Early feedback is best summed up by the guy who commented that the programme was "way too cool, man". All the speakers were great but the crowd was the real star of the night. Thank you again and look forward to seeing you at the next one; check out BarCamp Glasgow LinkedIn group too for… Continue

News June - Art War & Film Premier

Dear All,

A busy June!

I'm the lead in an 'audio motion picture'; an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's 'The Dunwich Horror'. We're part of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, which is a tremendous honour. It's very much a Franz Kafka Big Band Production - as all the leading Kafka talent are involved behind or infront of the microphone. The only omission is Jenny-Ann Marshall - unfortunately, there was no budget for travel - so we couldn't transport Jenny across the… Continue
