Big brand takes all marketing online

Southern comfort have taken their entire marketing and advertising budget, $10million and put it towards online marketing - taking $6 million on late-night cable TV and another $1.5 million on magazines. SoCo are instead putting their ads onto tv watching site HULU and other targeted 21-29yr old age range.

Will this be the first of many large brands shun… Continue

Ditching the iPhone

The Apple iPhone has taken off and like the iPod, it has brought new users to Apple for the first time. However, are their monopolistic and single proprietary ways causing users to boycott the product? Some users in The States have issues more with AT&T (the carrier of the iphone) and the iPhone, versus the phone itself or Apple, which isn't necessarily how users in the UK feel with O2. However Apple's… Continue

So this week I finally started using delicious properly, which is something I wish I had started a long time ago. Start up companies and investment opportunities

I meant to post this a while back - the following video is an indication of the Scottish appetite for start ups and the investors circling.

I had an interesting conversation with an investor recently who was very very keen to invest in excess of £4m but was struggling to find a business in his area of expertise with a proven business model that would give him a better return in 3 years than if the money sat in a high interest account - an interesting paradox where there are people… Continue

What is a University?

So today's question that is niggling me is this What (really) is a University? Is it just a collection of buildings, people, expertise, space? ....and more specifically what could they be? And even more specifically what do the creative genii that inihabit 38mins need from a University?

And this is what got me thinking....

The Harvard Classics. 1909–14.

The Idea of a University. I. What Is a University?

Made me smile: defining creativity

I think one would be crazy to try to define what creativity is and where good ideas come from - the pressure to then come up regularly with great creative ideas would be so intense as to stop any such activity taking place. However, Andy Hobsbawm says in 3"22 what he think creativity can at least achieve, and gives us his rather entertaining Green Thing… Continue

Building an App ......

.... the idea was to build an app, putting on the Apple Apps store, make a fortune to then in turn make my feature film.....

How wrong was I???

I'm getting there, but it is pretty hard when you know no code at all.... trying to build an app on the "fly" is tough. But you know, there are a hundred people out there willing and able to help and give advice on what to do and how to do it...

So, I'll try and put something on this blog on a regular basis to let you… Continue

SEO - Willie Wallace V The Turd Finder

I'm between projects at the moment and spending time between researching new tech and SEO for my main web site.

I've slightly improved search by adding heading titles etc but I haven't updated search maps or anything.

I think coders often find it hard to take a step back and look at things from a business perspective. Linked in have a lot of info on SEO etc and Ive been reading up on some of the best ways to increase ranking etc. Apparently one tried and tested way is to have links on… Continue

Well, its been a busy couple of weeks for mypolice. I’ve been down in London working with Think Public who are focused on using design to improve service experiences in the public sector.
