Towards a Creative (digital) Scotland - the road to the aisles.

A shorter version of this piece appeared in the Scotsman on 1st July.

Consider what could happen if Creative Scotland spent a little less on arts productions and a little more on developing audiences? Imagine if Creative Scotland stopped funding projects that dabbled in new technologies and instead, strategically invested in the digital infrastructure that could transform Scotland for arts companies and audiences alike.

The technologies already exist to provide a… Continue

Tunnel Vision

The human eye is constructed in such a way that we have an inevitable ‘blind spot’. We cope with this by scanning our visual field with both eyes and by deducing what we should be seeing. We make an educated guess.

This is fine. The mistake is to assume that because we see something, then everybody else sees it the same way. One person’s educated deduction is another’s wild gamble. Couple this with every culture’s unwillingness to see… Continue

The old music industry: a ghost at the table? MA Music: Innovation and Entrepreneurship at UWS

‘There’s something happening in here.

What it is ain’t exactly clear…’

(For What It’s Worth/Buffalo Springfield)

Although Stephen Stills wrote those lyrics about a riot on the Sunset Strip back in the revolutionary 60’s, that sentiment could just as easily apply to the current state of the music industry.

A new music initiative from the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) is addressing this situation by offering a ground-breaking new course that… Continue
