Muvizu updates

I just wanted to let you know that Muvizu has been updated with loads of new features. The team in Glasgow have spent the last couple of months enabling moving cameras, new characters, better UI and the ability to import your own 3D models.

Muvizu is a powerful and easy-to-use 3D animation application. It has a toy-like feel and lets people craft and animate their own 3D animations. It's free for non-commercial use too.… Continue

STREAM 6: TERRITORY

I've saved the best till last for my Fringe reviews. As a passionate advocate of new writing, and of course emerging diverse talent - I was lucky enough to catch the very last performance of Reuben Johnson's Territory at the Pleasance Courtyard last Sunday.

Indeed, it’s really rare that you get to say (honestly) “I’ve just watched something of real quality and pedigree” when it comes to emerging theatre.

This… Continue

Here's one I made earlier - The joy of planning in the midst of a revolution

What hope is there for the PR profession in a world of digital media? The problem is not the willingness or the imagination of PR professionals to appreciate new ideas and see how they can be used for their clients/organisations. The problem is the organisational inertia caused by the planning timetable.

Conventionally, organisations of size begin writing next year’s well before the end of this year. The messages are put in place, the… Continue

Announced by my colleague John Sutherland
a little while ago, the Greater Glasgow Games group (GGGg or g4 - take your pick!) has had a couple of meetings now, and I'll be trying to keep things moving for the next little while...

Our current focus is on mapping the games industry in the Glasgow area - every so often we learn about another… Continue

LinkLove: what's your favourite website?

As an Unapologetic Geek, I do get a kick out of lists of any kind, so couldn't resist having a browse through Time Magazine's picks of the 50 best websites around today.

Labuat is simply the most beautiful site I've ever seen. It uses clever tech to allow users to… Continue

STREAM 5: PEDAL PUSHER

I’ve been really enjoying the final weeks of the Fringe and have seen some great (and, granted, some pretty awful) stuff. I have to say with so much going on, and so much beautiful scenery literally minutes away, I'm yet to shed a tear for the hustle and bustle of Hackney. I think all this fresh air is intoxicating me with good moods. Very disconcerting for a Londoner.

I’ll be posting a few reviews in the coming few days along with a… Continue

Map of the New World

Nmap.org has created this incredible map using favicons of the 300,000 biggest websites on the Internet (according to Alexa).

The size of the favicon corresponds to sites with the most traffic. The smallest icons--those corresponding to sites with approximately 0.0001% reach--are scaled to 16x16 pixels. The largest icon (Google) is 11,936 x 11,936 pixels, and the whole diagram is 37,440… Continue

Frank's digital sculptures

On 5th of August, we opened "Contested Spaces" at the PLACE gallery on Fountain Street in Belfast, an exhibition of five digital, or virtual, sculptures set into video footage of locations around Belfast city. The sculptures were all created by designers working at Frank, with the overarching purpose of the project to inspire creative thinking, experimentation and research into new techniques in motion graphics. The project had its roots in… Continue

Village Life

A new school in a village can be the most important civic building that will ever be built there. It carries the hopes not just of the designated stakeholders but of the whole community, and can change the nature of a place as somewhere that you would want to live in.

It is easy to overstate ‘placemaking’ at the expense of the delivery of services. But in the real world these two agendas need to be reunited and recognised as facets of… Continue

Facebook Places - has the time for geolocation apps arrived?

Although us in Europe haven't been privileged with the advent of Facebook Places yet, I can't explain how extremely excited I am about this new service. I have closely followed the growth and development of foursquare and understand the value of it as a marketing and engagement tool for brands, but have yet to really feel it is really worth investment. Until it has a larger user-base, I don't quite feel I can recommend it to our clients as a key social media channel to invest in,… Continue

It's A Small World

Axel Roessler made this beautiful, haunting film, 'It's a Small World', by animating old Polaroid pictures, found in a discarded photo album, bought at the Melrose Trading Post fleamarket. It's an incredible piece of work and if you'd like to see more of Axel's work check his site Country Trouble. Soundtrack by Bertram… Continue

How to get that job

The best tip I can give on how to get the job you want is to never forget the interview is also your chance to ask questions. And asking the right questions can often be the key to getting hired.

You’re in the room, you think you’ve given a good performance, and now your interviewers ask:

‘Do you have any questions?’

Most times we mumble and mutter something like, ‘Nope, nothing,’ and shuffle off expecting the… Continue

Even Rupert Murdoch started somewhere

It's that time of the year when someone will say,"The newspaper is dead" and the usual Yes/No/Pavlovian response will follow. It's been going on since the former journalist and actor Peter O'Toole said, after one particularly bad review, "Today's newspapers are tomorrow's fish and chip wrappers."

Well, here it is again, as a new site allows you to make your very own newspaper… Continue
