I've been asked to speak at the first Creative Scotland 'Open Session' on Friday in Dundee, as an expert from the interactive and games sector.
The idea, as a speaker, is to provide 'perspective and provocation. I can do that.
However, I'm canvassing opinion and input on the issues which YOU guys think are important and what you think the role of CS should be within the increasingly converged creative industries here in Scotland…

16 years on from starting the world's first games degrees in Dundee, I continue to fight the Demons Of Stupidity to help students get real and get developing games. The latest front is being launched in September! We will be, with other games developers, helping UWS 3rd & 4th years games students create tablet and advergames in internship-like programmes.

Hi folks, I thought this was worth a post in its own right...
A new games publisher, focusing on social games (Facebook) and smartphones (Apple/Android) launched today, with an announcement in Holyrood by Alex Salmond.

Forgive the cross post, but I thought this might be of interest to 38 Minutes members. It's a round up of the last twelve months for the interactive and videogames sectors here in Scotland...

The MediaGuardian today reports
on the UK games industry's dismay at plans to create a gaming hub in - wait, you've guessed it - London.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not doubting the level of talent in London, but like many other commentators I do want to point out that it's not the centre of the earth. Dundee may have… Continue

Getting a new digital media company off the ground, whilst holding down a full-time job, is hard work. Problem is, how to do both at the the same time, when you need money and
need to create product.
So, seven months into the TuDocs project, we have three things going: our games career website
, an iPad game, and a book on games careers. Eight people working away - all with… Continue

Every now and again something comes up that I want to share at 38minutes from my faraway perch in San Francisco.
My company, Rocket Ninja, Inc
., is hiring a Games Systems Designer
(i.e., a games designer who actually understands the fiddly mathy bits). My CEO tells me we'll consider people from anywhere on the planet, so I reckon Scotland very nearly qualifies!
Just to be clear: this position is for a number cruncher, someone who chews and swallows game… Continue

RIP Scottish Games - Fall 2010. Like General Patton, I was there
. Where? I was there when Scotland burst onto the video games industry scene as a major player with Lemmings, I played GTA
before it was launched, saw Hedz
crash and burn, witnessed the rise and fall of Red Lemon, Visual Science, DMA and many others. An industry from Alpha to Omega; beginning and end.
Around the time I am writing and you are reading, major… Continue

You know the route: you see an ad that sez, 'our client, an international blue-chip organisation, has immediate need for ...
' So, excited
, you send your details in and the trail goes cold.
Why? Because recruitment agencies are unregulated. Anyone can set themselves up and start phishing
. Phishing is using the web to gather-in details from people using a false premise. Pharming is to… Continue

I'm still smarting from the car crash of RealTime Worlds in Dundee. Someone I was talking to called it a 'Darien moment', recalling how Scotland crashed out of the independant nations group when we lost everything in the disastrous Darien colony.
Eggs. Baskets. All. One. In.
So, is this the end of the great independent games developers in Scotland, consigned to the same dustbin as computer manufacturing, coal mining and… Continue

Hi folks, just want to let you know about the DIS:E event taking place later this month. It's an academic event, looking at the point where interactivity (games), traditional media and the law, all combine into one glorious whole...
It's free entry, but you have to register to head along. I've been to several of the previous year's Symposia (plural!) and they've been very worthwhile.
You can find out more and book tickets… Continue

Being a games industry & education person, I was attracted by an offer of free money
via a fund of 80 x £25k
launched by the Scottish Government. If I have - which we at TuDocs Productions believe we do - a great new idea that will change the world and potentially make a lot of dosh, then the ScotGov will give us £25k to help it get going.
So far, so good. Its a well-tested model in Scotland: the government holds masses of… Continue

is heading up a group of games-related bods perparing to make a presentation to the Scottish Parliament.
Anyone want to join us in making this presentation? We want to tell the MSPs that there are games companies in Glasgow too (for Glasgow read the Cumbernauld-Dumfries-Ayr-Oban-area!). There is a… Continue

Im just back from a visit to a games studio in Dundee. So, I thought it was time to reflect upon what they said, and what others have said, and to post it up into the wider domain.
- these are still the core skillset required for AAA title games programming. Nothing will ever change much here as there is such a pile of C++ code out there in engines. However, big… Continue

G4 is a newly-established group that exists to help students and graduates in digital media get their new-start studios off the ground. We are having our first meeting at UWS Paisley on Tuesday. We have attendees coming from UWS, GCal and Reid Kerr. Not bad for our first ever meeting.
What's it about? Basically, back in the 90's I did a wheen of work to get Dundee on the games map - with help from Dave Jones, Chris van der Kuyl and others.… Continue

[Copied from a response at http://blog.digitalinspiration.org.uk/2009/12/platform-announcement/
I think the intent here is good. But there are huge obstacles to achieving this as part of any grand plan. I'm not sure it's even a very good idea to attempt to do it.
I think we need to start with a much better definition of what we mean when we say "platform".

Our science-fiction cross-platform series is going through the second draft of it's script at present. After a very productive meeting with script editor Steve Brookes, at N.Ireland Screen last week, Ian McDonald, our illustrious writer, has been shaping the second draft of E8.
In the last couple of months we have been in talks to take the project to the next level, in preparation for raising the full production… Continue
