Appleton Tower - Edinburgh's answer to Californian Garages?

"Two minutes later they were heading for Buccleuch Place, a six-story Georgian block which faced the more modern (and far uglier) University edifices. One tower in particular has been voted the building most people in Edinburgh wanted to see condemned. The tower, perhaps sensing this hostility, had begun to self destruct, great chunks of cladding falling from it at irregular intervals."

Exit Music, p26, Ian Rankin, 2007

In sharp contrast to the beautifully and thoughtfully designed Informatics Forum on (binary numbered) 10 Crichton Street stands 11 Crichton Street, a.k.a. the Appleton Tower, voted one of Britain's worst buildings.

But with the Informatics Forum housing Europe's biggest and best computer science department, could the Appleton Tower be Edinburgh's answer to Californian garages and homebrew clubs?

See you at the next Tech Meetup or an Informatics Ventures workshop.

It's actually pretty nice inside!

I like it from the outside too. Collapsing with a certain dignity. Soma good ideas have spun from its corridors too.
