After 11 years in Tokyo I've moved back to Scotland, my first time to live in Edinburgh as well. So far no reverse culture shock, but I do really need a fix of proper sushi.
I will miss Japan, most of my friends are there, lots of very happy memories and I'm very happy that I managed to forge a good career as a freelance photographer for a lot of different media and private clients.
When I announced I was leaving everyone told me "there are no jobs in Scotland, you should stay here." However, I remember being told the same thing when I started out in Tokyo, "there're no jobs in Tokyo for foreign photographers unless you have the connections", "you'll never find work as the market is already saturated" but still I managed to build up from zero and make it work, all it took was hard work, being good and also having a lot of luck. It wasn't easy there, I'm sure it's not going to be easy here either but I am looking forward to the new challenges, the new mistakes I will learn from and the new people I'm going to meet along the way.
Here's to new starts, new challenges and hopefully some good sushi.
